May 2014 Newsletter

Can you believe summer is almost here? During the first half of 2014 your support made a new Chase Child Life program possible at Providence Tarzana Medical Center and has allowed countless critically ill children to just be kids through their participation in our ongoing Child Life program. We hope you'll take a few minutes to learn more about how your support is making a difference by reading below. Thank you so much for your continued commitment to helping kids overcome the trauma of hospitalization!

Sincerely,

Chase Foundation

Plans underway for new Chase Place playroom at Providence.

Playroom will be constructed at Providence Tarzana Medical Center.

Preliminary plans are underway for the new Chase Place playroom. The hospital has engaged DPR Construction, and they have begun the preliminary work to ready the floor for construction including seismic testing. Concurrently the Chase Child Life team, including Chase Foundation board member Margie Wagner, is working with the medical center facilities and nursing staff to plan for optimal design and use of the space. Once a plan is finalized, we look forward to sharing the designs and details. Providence staff, including Pediatric Nurse Manager, Feri Kiani, are excited to learn best practices from the other Child Life programs that bear the Chase Foundation name.

HOPE Early Child Initiative

The HOPE Early Childhood Symposium presented by the Chase Foundation was held on February 11, 2014 to educate and engage Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) faculty and staff who work with young children living with cancer or serious chronic illness.

More than 75 staff members attended the symposium which was held on February 11th, 2014 at CHLA and organized by Ernest R. Katz PhD and Kathleen Ruccione, PhD of the HOPE program at CHLA.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles has expressed deep gratitude to Chase Foundation for providing a helping hand during some of the most difficult times in the lives of families and children dealing with cancer and other blood diseases.

Chase Place Lets Kids Play

In March of 2014, the Chase Child Life Department was excited to welcome three new Child Life Assistants,  resulting in additional hours of Chase Place playroom operations.

The impact of Chase Place is best summed up by this parent quote, "I don't know what we would do without this space.  It's so wonderful to watch my kids play together just like they do at home.  It almost makes me forget he is sick."

Chase Place at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA allows kids of all ages the opportunity to play and forget about their hospital stay.  The goal of Chase Child Life is to offer appropriate choices, distraction and normal play activities with the help of trained facilitators.

Chase Foundation again supports UCLA 5k Run / Walk

The Bruin 5k Run / Walk Supports the Chase Child Life Program at UCLA.  The 15th Annual Bruin Run / Walk was held on April 27th.  It continues to be one of the biggest student-run events on campus.  The Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA Chase Child Life Program is the main beneficiary of the event which has live performances, free food and giveaways as well as a silent auction and prizes.

"The students do a great job with this event and should be proud of this good and heartfelt work on behalf of sick children and their families" said Robin Richards, Chase Foundation Chairman.

We hope that you can participate with Chase Foundation at the UCLA Run / Walk next year!
